In May 8 2019, the sports betting bill was signed into law by Indiana’s Governor Eric Holcomb establishing, that the new launch will only be for in- person retail sportsbooks at the state’s casinos and betting parlors. The legislature includes sports betting in gambling facilities and mobile sports betting, though it seems that the mobile betting is likely to wait for at least few more months.

The International Gaming Commission is yet to receive a request for launching online sports betting. Sara Gonso Talt, the Executive Director of the Indiana Gaming Commission said, “The timing of the launch is going to be dictated by the operators getting us the info we need to review and approve for launch. At this point, it’s too early to tell when that will be. There’s a checklist of items that need to be done before launch, and the timing is dictated on the operators getting us that required information”. Due to its complexity and requirements of the IGC regarding the geolocation and internal controls, the operators are not going to have an easy job. Mobile and apps sports wagering it’s going to take longer but apparently it’s going to be done responsibly conforming the Apple’s new gambling policy and following Pennsylvania’s example.

Six Operators Have Gained License, to Begin with

So far the focus is set more on the retail and the existing casino operations. Having said that, six operators have been issued with temporary license to control online wagering on land based venues. After all Indiana isn’t wasting any time in making a huge progress to join the new betting market. These operators include, Caesars Interactive Entertainment who has got a permit for the Horseshoe Casino Hammond and FanDuel who acquire permits to power online wagering for Belterra and Blue Chip Casino Resorts. For the Lawrencburg-based Hollywood Casino the main responsible is Penn Sports Interactive who’s got a vendor license. In addition, Penn National is to launch sports betting at its Ameristar Casino East Chicago on Lake Michigan and a new kiosk and tickets at a new sportsbook which will show live sports event. Rush Street Interactive has also been given a temporary license for the Blue Skye Casino’s French Lick Resort. The sixth licenses were approved for William Hill who covers the Tropicana Casino in Evansville.

The Gaming Commission Meeting

Another thing Indiana is looking forward to, is the Gaming Commission meeting due to take place in 28 August. The Commission will discuss the new rules and regulations which will be clarified before the very beginning of the new betting season. After passing the bill into law, the regulations were set and put in consultation by the members of the public and stakeholders who were able to submit comments till August 1. On the meeting ahead, the regulations are expected to be adopted and the new betting experience to begin.
